Hiring Process
PSI has streamlined
its candidate sourcing, qualifying and presentation processes to make it easier
on all parties involved. We recognize that each of our clients has unique hiring
requirements and we strive to meet those needs. We may work directly with the
hiring manager or we may work with a corporate-level unit such as a procurement
department, division representative or project staffing representative.
There
are several important steps in the hiring process where you will be given the
opportunity to make an excellent impression. Here are some tips for each:
Prepare
an excellent Resume: Your resume gets you in the door. Your resume
must be a solid representation of your past work and accomplishments. Take the
time to use words that truly describe your role on a project or task and highlight
your accomplishments so the reader knows your contributions. A resume that contains
words that match the position requirements most closely will have the greatest
chances of being noticed by hiring authorities. So, understand those requirements
first, and then speak to them specifically in your resume. This will also ensure
that online search engines will pick up the matches. If you need assistance with
your resume, PSI can help.
Secure
excellent references: Hiring authorities usually depend on 2-3 solid
professional references to learn more about you and your capabilities. PSI will
check your references as you begin the early phases of working with us. Choose
references that can speak to your accomplishments and who know you well. Some
hiring authorities are specific and prefer references from supervisors. Let your
references know, in advance, that you would like to use them so they are not
caught off-guard when the call arrives.
Impress
on the Telephone Screening: Telephone screens have become the
vehicle of choice to initially speak to a candidate. It saves time for
everyone involved and is a solid screening tool. When you have a telephone
screening, be sure to use a land line and not a cell phone and be sure you are at the number when the hiring authority calls—be
on time—not a minute late. Many candidates are immediately ruled out
because they didn't answer the phone
on time. Many hiring managers will make a hiring decision based on the telephone screening, so remember that the initial phone screening may, in fact, be the final call before a decision is made. While telephone screening is very effective and time efficient for you
and the hiring authority, it can be a challenge. As the hiring authority asks
questions, you need to be able to think on your feet and provide responses that
are complete thoughts, reflect your true capabilities and offer a pleasant, confident
voice. If you're at all timid, practice first so you can rehearse your replies
to commonly asked questions such as your accomplishments, where you excel, where
you need development and why you left your previous employers. As you develop
sentences that reflect your experiences and accomplishments, craft your sentences
using an opening, body and conclusion. The telephone screen provides a vital
first impression and you want to be ready.
Wow
the Interviewer: If you pass the telephone screening, chances are good
you will be invited for an in-person interview. The hiring manager has heard
your voice, listened to you articulate your accomplishments and now it's time
to see you in person. It's critical that you dress professionally and ensure
that you are groomed, neat and clean. Maintain eye contact, use appropriate hand
gestures and listen attentively. The interview is where all the pieces thus far
will come together. What you've said on the resume, how you described yourself
on the telephone and now how you perform for the interviewer form the complete
picture. This is your chance to shine, so be conscientious and sure that you've
addressed every detail. If interviewing poses a challenge for you, let
your recruiter know and PSI can work with you on several techniques and
provide feedback.
